Hello All!

I created a photo book for each of my children depicting all the monumental "first's" in their lives. First smile, first tooth, first steps, first day of school. Well, you get the idea. For Sofia, I will have to add first ER visit. A couple of weeks ago we had a beautiful sunny day so, Ed took Sofia to the park. She was in one of her "little miss full charge" moods and wasn't listening well. Sofia ran right in front of a 12 year old boy on a swing. She took a big hit right to the forehead and flew backwards. The boy felt terrible but, Ed reassured him it wasn't his fault. There was no way for him to stop on a dime. I have scolded Miss Sofia many times for running in front of the swings and have scooped her up in the nick of time more than once. Sofe refused to get back in her stroller so, Ed carried her all the way home crying and moaning. I noticed the beginnings of a black eye right away and became concerned when she didn't want to move off the sofa. I asked her where it hurt and she just cried louder. We debated about taking her to the emergency room only because I didn't want to overreact and make her wait and wait for unnecessary xrays and frightening scans. Also, I didn't want to expose her to any other viruses. With our luck we would be seated next to the only patient with swine flu in the county.

Then Ed started to scare me with his recap of Natasha Richardson's untreated head injury. So, I called my wonderful neighbor who is a nurse. We usually call upon her for a medical opinion or a doctor referral. Until now it had just been for a couple cases of chicken pox and fevers ( I don't own a thermometer because they make me crazy.) She gave Sofe a once over and noticed an injury to her left leg. Apparently, the boy's foot struck her shin at impact. I was mad at myself for not seeing the obvious. I just concerned myself with her head and eye. We decided to take her to the emergency room right away. They did a CT scan of her head and discovered everything was normal. Unfortunately, we did not get the same good news for her xray. She did infact break her left leg. Poor little thing looks pitiful. We followed up with a specialist who put Sofia in a permanent cast. He anticipated it will be on for four weeks. Fortunately, it is a simple break and she should not need physical therapy. I let her pick out her cast color and she chose neon pink.

Initially, I was concerned that I would have to take a leave from work or hire a home health care provider. Sofia's sitter reassured me that she was up for the challenge. They even rearranged their home to accomodate her needs. We are sooo blessed to have such a wonderful woman caring for Sofia throughout the week. They treat her like family and Sofia adores them all. It is not easy to carry Sofe everywhere, she is heavy with that cast. Plus, it isn't easy to bathe her, dress her, and take care of her toileting needs. Alma takes such good care of Sofia while watching two infants and two other active toddlers. I don't know how she does it but, we are grateful that she does.

Sofia has become bored laying around and wants this cast off yesterday. Over the past week, she has become braver and has started to crawl and scoot herself about. Yesterday, I cringed as I watched her do a somersault on the sofa. I have seen a new demanding side of our princesa. She bellows constantly for me, "Mommmmmy come hewr!!" She laughs when I say, "yes your majesty." She enjoys the dinner trays and all the attention she gets from everyone, especially her big brothers. After two weeks on the sofa, we recently ventured out a few times to the stores and park. If we are out and about she shows everyone her cast and says, "Yook, I got a big owie." Sofia also tells everyone that the boy on the swing needs two time outs and a spanking. So much for forgiveness huh? I think she gets that grudge holding from me. Having heard this story, my aunt sent her a book, "The Lords Prayer." Talk about the perfect gift and a much better example than I provided. At first, she only wanted him to get a time out, it was my suggestion that he be given two. Oops.

We got awesome tickets to Sesame Street Live. Elmo and sno-cones was just what the doctor ordered. Sofia LOVED it and thought the characters were waving just to her. She clapped along with the songs, danced on my lap and had a smile stuck on her face the entire time. Many of the children around us slept or just sat there. Ed and I were thrilled she enjoyed it so much.

I enjoyed my first Mother's Day surrounded by all three of my children. It was a great day! They took me out for deep dish pizza. All of us ate way too much. Sofia sent me some delicious chocolate strawberries and a cheesecake sampler. She even offered to taste test them for me. She gave a thumbs up and said, "yummy!" What a selfless child :) The boys gave me a gift certificate to my favorite hair salon which I will NEED to use shortly. They also promised not to argue for the entire day. That was my favorite present, not having to play referee for twenty- four hours. I am thankful every day for these children.

Joe turned seventeen on the 14th of May. I missed the birthday hooky trip because Sofia wasn't up to it. I told a little white lie to the school attendance office saying, the boys were not feeling well. Then off they all went to watch their favorite Cubbies play. All three of them returned several hours later with a very noticeable sunburn. After I doled out the aloe, I thought wow, they are going to be sooo busted tomorrow when they go back to school. Joe said the teachers already knew it was his birthday and they just laughed when they saw him. My kids are in school every day so, luckily there was no consequence. We enjoyed a great dinner at Joe's favorite mexican restaurant and came home for cake. Of course we had to re-light the candles because as a two year old, Sofia thinks every party is for or about her. She had a meltdown when we sang to Joe and quickly recovered when she got a turn.

My niece Lauren made her First Holy Communion this month. What an awesome party they held afterwards. I thought that cast would leave Sofia on the dance floor sidelines. No way! She insisted on participating in everything. Sofe cracked us up with her costume changes and one legged dance moves to YMCA, the Macarena, the Chicken Dance, and Cupid Shuffle. She did need a little help with the Limbo and Musical Chairs. The big girls took turns waiting to sign her cast. No doubt she will be our social butterfly. Special thank you to Lauren and all the girls who included Sofia in the fun. We made it about two blocks before she was sound asleep in the car. The next morning she wanted to put on another dress and said, "more party."

We will give you an update on Sofia's recovery. We would appreciate it if you keep her in your prayers. We are praying for a speedy, healthy healing.

Bye bye for now.
